The Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Program focuses on the fundamentals of both thermal and mechanical applications which will be encountered within the industry. It meets international standards with the Montreal Protocol on substances that depletes the ozone layer. The introduction of recent phase-out programs has led us to practice new safety requirements since the introduction of hydrocarbons.
It covers general terminology, thermodynamics, VFR technology and applications in residential, commercial and industrial systems. It includes mobile air conditioning (MAC) and the needed skills of basic welding, plumbing, electrical, electronics and designed calculations. We focus on development of professionalism, personal hygiene and the laws governing the occupation. Close relations with the Department of Environment has realized our goal to become the first institution to carry out a CFC, HCFC and HFC recovery project. During this exercise we develop the importance of preventative maintenance and preliminary equipment installation as in demand. The introduction of inverter systems has increased the demand for HCFC recovery hence making a level two certification mandatory. We emphasize the use of measuring instruments and a wide range of tests when working with VRF and new inverter technologies. It elaborates on the use of dry nitrogen to inert the fittings to be welded and the pressurizing of refrigeration systems for leak detection.
Immediately prior to certification, the future technician will be sent out in the field as required and get first hand introduction where he/she will be assessed on all knowledge and skills which should have been completed throughout training. Upon completion of the two months on-the-job training, the technician will subsequently be certified; he will be prepared for employment or take on the challenges of obtaining a level three certification.
